Abstract—Modeling artificial societies that form an economy can add to our understanding of modern economic theory. A case of interest is the Sugarscape model developed by Joshua M. Epstein and Robert Axtell. In many respects, Sugarscape exhibits emergent behaviors that adhere to neoclassical economics; however, other behaviors of the model do not coincide as well with economic theory. We explore the relationship between the model and economic theory, attempting to mitigate the disparity between theory and experimental data. Recommendations for further research are made with the objective to contribute insight to the world of economics.
